Hiring a newborn photographer is a special decision—you're trusting someone to capture some of the most precious moments of your baby's first days. But not all photographers are created equal. Before you book, here are seven essential questions to ask:
-
Are you experienced with newborns?
Newborn photography requires more than just camera skills—it demands experience in safely handling and posing babies. As a Boston-based newborn photographer with over 20 years of experience, I can attest to the fact that there are skills unique to this niche. A wedding photographer may be able to anticipate moments and work well on location, but that doesn't mean they know how to wrap infants both safely and aesthetically well. Many also aren’t trained in operating studio lighting, which is crucial for creating soft, flattering images of newborns.
2. What safety measures do you take?
Your baby’s safety comes first. A professional newborn photographer should follow best practices, use safe props, and know how to pose your baby securely.
3. Can I see your portfolio?
Reviewing previous work helps you understand their style and skill level. Make sure their aesthetic aligns with your vision—whether that’s clean and minimalist or whimsical and colorful.
4 Where will the session take place?
Some photographers work in studios while others offer in-home sessions. Decide what’s best for you and your baby. Here's a blog post link for more considerations on this topic:
5. When should we schedule the session?
Most newborn sessions are done within the first two weeks after birth, when babies are sleepiest and more easily posed. However, I often hear of newborn photographers turning down sessions beyond a certain age—and as a mother who believes every family deserves beautiful professional images of their infant, I would never do that. Any professional newborn photographer should be able to adjust to a variety of ages. Whether your baby is just a few days old or a few weeks, an experienced photographer will know how to adapt their approach and still create meaningful, stunning images. I’ll work with you to find the best timing and ensure the experience is smooth and special, no matter your baby’s age.
What’s included in your packages?
Ask about pricing, what’s included (prints, digital files, albums), and whether there are any additional fees. Transparency is key.
7. What happens if my baby is fussy or needs breaks?
Babies are unpredictable! And that’s completely normal. A professional newborn photographer understands that every baby has their own rhythm. It’s all about patience. That’s why my newborn sessions are scheduled for up to four hours—to allow plenty of time for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, and just giving baby and Mom a moment when needed. This relaxed pace also ensures we can capture a beautiful variety of props, poses, and backdrops, regardless of how the session unfolds. A patient, flexible approach helps keep stress levels low for both parents and baby—and that comfort shows in the final images.
