Exhausted After Sunday’s Catch

A Frog & Toad Inspired Newborn Photography Session Near Boston, MA

Sometimes… it just starts with a very successful day of fishing. 🎣🐸

As a Boston newborn photographer, one of the greatest joys of my job is getting to know the families who walk through my studio doors. Every baby has a story before they are even born, and those stories often begin with the nursery their parents lovingly create.

Some nurseries are decorated with woodland animals, others feature favorite sports teams, hot air balloons, or soft floral designs. Every once in a while, however, a family shares a theme that immediately makes me smile.

This sweet little girl’s nursery was inspired by the beloved children’s books Frog & Toad by Arnold Lobel.

Instantly, memories of those timeless stories came rushing back. Frog and Toad have been introducing children to the value of friendship, kindness, and adventure for generations. Their simple illustrations and heartwarming tales have become classics, making them the perfect inspiration for a baby’s very first room.

When a Nursery Theme Inspires the Perfect Newborn Portrait

As soon as Mom told me about the nursery theme, I knew exactly what I wanted to create.

Fortunately, I had been waiting for this moment.

Hidden away in my growing collection of newborn photography props was an adorable hand-knit frog outfit I had purchased quite some time ago. Alongside it sat a tiny fishing pole that had never made its way into a session before. I had been saving them, hoping one day the perfect family would come along.

This was finally that day.

One of my favorite aspects of newborn photography is designing sessions that reflect each family’s personality. Rather than simply choosing colors or props at random, I love incorporating meaningful details that tell your family’s story. Those personal touches often become the photographs parents cherish the most because they capture more than just what their baby looked like—they capture a season of life they’ll never experience again.

A Sleepy Little Fishergirl

After gently dressing this sweet little girl in her tiny frog outfit and carefully placing the miniature fishing pole in her hands, everything seemed to come together effortlessly.

She settled into a deep sleep almost immediately.

Her tiny fingers loosely wrapped around the fishing pole.

Her little cheeks resting peacefully.

Her relaxed expression looked exactly like someone who had spent the entire morning sitting beside a quiet pond.

Looking at the finished portrait, I couldn’t help but laugh.

It looked as though she had just returned from the biggest fishing trip of her life.

Completely exhausted.

Mission accomplished.

That is exactly how the title for this portrait was born…

“Exhausted After Sunday’s Catch.”

Storytelling Through Newborn Photography

I love photographs that invite people to pause for a moment and imagine the story behind them.

That’s one of the wonderful things about newborn photography. Babies don’t have to smile or interact with the camera to create an emotional connection. Sometimes the smallest details—a tiny hand, a peaceful expression, or one thoughtfully chosen prop—allow your imagination to do the rest.

These storytelling portraits often become favorites because they make people smile every time they walk past them hanging on the wall.

Every Newborn Session is Designed Around Your Family

At Alternate Angles Photography, every newborn session is designed specifically for each family.

Whether your inspiration comes from a favorite children’s book, a meaningful hobby, military service, your profession, or a cherished family tradition, I enjoy finding creative ways to incorporate those details into timeless portraits.

While I always focus first on creating beautiful classic images, adding one or two personalized setups often makes your gallery feel even more meaningful.

Over the past 20 plus years, I’ve collected hundreds of carefully selected newborn outfits, wraps, blankets, bonnets, baskets, and specialty props. Many of them have been waiting patiently for exactly the right baby to arrive.

Watching a family’s excitement when I tell them,

“I actually have something perfect for that,”

is one of my favorite moments during the planning process.

A Full-Service Boston Newborn Photography Experience

The best part is that parents don’t have to worry about bringing everything themselves.

My studio is fully stocked with professional props, wraps, outfits, and accessories, making the planning process simple and stress-free.

Together, we’ll choose colors, textures, and themes that complement your vision while creating portraits that will still feel timeless decades from now.

Whether you’re dreaming of something whimsical like this Frog & Toad setup or simply want elegant, classic newborn portraits, every session is thoughtfully planned with your family in mind.

It’s About More Than Beautiful Pictures

As much as I love creating fun themed images like this Frog & Toad portrait, my goal is always much bigger than simply making a cute photograph.

I’m preserving memories.

The tiny fingers that will soon hold crayons.

The sleepy stretches that disappear far too quickly.

The soft newborn cheeks you’ll one day miss kissing.

The little wrinkles on their back.

The flaky skin on their fingertips.

These fleeting details change within just a matter of weeks, which is why newborn photography is so incredibly special.

Years from now, this little girl may not remember that her nursery was filled with Frog & Toad books, but her parents certainly will.

They’ll remember carefully decorating her room.

They’ll remember eagerly waiting for her arrival.

They’ll remember reading those stories together before bedtime.

And they’ll remember bringing her home for the very first time.

This portrait will forever remind them of that chapter in their family’s story.

Why It’s Best to Book Your Newborn Photography Session Before Baby Arrives

One of the questions I hear most often is, “When should we book our newborn session?”

The answer surprises many parents—before your baby is born.

Most families reserve their newborn photography session during the second trimester or early in the third trimester. Booking ahead ensures space on my calendar around your due date while still allowing flexibility since babies almost always have their own schedule!

Once your little one arrives, all you have to do is send me a quick message, and we’ll choose the perfect session date. Newborn portraits are typically photographed within the first two weeks of life, when babies are still wonderfully sleepy and naturally curl into those sweet poses that parents love.

Planning your session ahead of time also gives us the opportunity to personalize your experience. During your consultation, we’ll talk about your favorite colors, the style of artwork you love, and any meaningful ideas you’d like to include. Whether it’s a nursery inspired by Frog & Toad, a family tradition, a favorite hobby, or simply a timeless neutral look, we’ll design a session that feels uniquely yours.

One of the things my clients appreciate most is that they don’t have to purchase or bring props. My Norwood studio is fully stocked with an extensive collection of wraps, handmade outfits, bonnets, headbands, blankets, baskets, and carefully curated accessories collected over more than 26 years of photographing newborns. Often, I already have exactly what you’re envisioning—just like I did for this sweet Frog & Toad session.

By booking early, you’ll have one less thing to think about once your baby arrives, allowing you to focus on what matters most—soaking up every precious moment with your newest family member while I preserve this unforgettable chapter through timeless photographs.
