Boston Newborn Photography: What’s the Best Age for Newborn Photos?
Apr 15, 2025 | By: Alternate Angles
When it comes to scheduling a studio session for newborn photography, one of the most common questions I hear from Boston area parents is: “What’s the best age for infant photos?” With 26 years of professional photography experience creating images for Boston families, I’ve had the joy of working with babies of all ages—and I can say with confidence that while there is a dream age, there’s never a wrong time to document your little one.
At Alternate Angles Photography, I recommend scheduling your newborn photo session for when your baby is between 7 to 10 days old. This window is often referred to in the photography world as the “sweet spot” because during these early days, babies are usually very sleepy and curled up, which makes it easier to pose them in those classic newborn positions we all love. Their tiny features, wrinkled skin, and curled toes are still so fresh, and capturing that fleeting moment in time is truly priceless.
That said, I understand that life doesn’t always go according to schedule. Whether you’ve had a longer hospital stay, needed more time to adjust to being home, or simply didn’t know when to book—don’t worry. I will do a newborn session at any age. The experience may look a little different, but the images will still be timeless and beautiful.
Here’s what changes as babies get older:
-
Session Length: Older babies tend to be more alert, and it often takes longer to soothe and settle them into a deep sleep for posing. As a result, the session may run longer.
-
Wrapped Images: You may notice more images of older babies swaddled snugly in wraps. These are not only adorable (some of my absolute favorite images come from wrapped sessions!), but they also help soothe older babies and keep them cozy throughout the shoot.
-
Pose Variety: As your baby gets older, what may adjust is that there will likely be fewer (if any) images of your baby unclothed. Additionally, some classic poses—like the one where baby’s head is perched sweetly on top of their hands—may no longer be possible if your baby is more alert or less flexible. That’s completely okay—we’ll still create a beautiful gallery full of loving, natural images that reflect your baby's unique stage and personality.
No matter how many days or weeks old your baby is, I always encourage parents to go ahead with a newborn session. There is so much beauty in capturing this special time—tiny fingers grasping yours, peaceful sleeping faces, soft yawns, and the joy in your eyes as you hold your brand-new child. These moments pass quickly, and having them preserved in photographs becomes more meaningful with each passing year.
As a mother myself, I understand the emotions that come with this season. It’s overwhelming, magical, and gone in a flash. Whether your session is at my cozy Norwood studio or in the comfort of your own home, I’ll make sure the experience is relaxed, warm, and tailored to your family.
At Alternate Angles Photography, I proudly serve families across the Boston area, and I consider it an honor to help preserve your most cherished memories. The newborn phase is short, but the images we create together will be treasures for a lifetime.
These are general thoughts based on my experience, but I know that every newborn is unique. As I work, I religiously follow the cues of each infant and will never force a specific pose or image. Safety always comes first, and my goal is to ensure your baby is comfortable, content, and gently guided throughout the session.
I look forward to meeting you and your little bundle of joy soon—and creating beautiful, lasting memories for your growing family!
