What If My Newborn Won’t Sleep During My Studio Newborn Session?
Bringing your newborn in for their very first professional photo session is such an exciting milestone—but it can also come with a little anxiety, especially when you're wondering how your baby will behave. One of the most common concerns parents have before a session is, “What if my infant won’t sleep?” If this question is lingering in your mind, take a deep breath—you’re not alone, and I’ve got you covered. My sessions are typically 4 hours long to allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, and calming breaks. And most importantly—regardless of whether your baby sleeps or not—I will deliver gorgeous images. I know how to adjust, read your baby’s cues, and create beautiful portraits whether they’re fast asleep or wide-eyed and curious.
First, It's Totally Normal
Let’s start by saying this: newborns are beautifully unpredictable. While many do fall into a deep sleep during their session, others are alert, curious, or just plain awake. And guess what? That’s completely okay. As a photographer who specializes in newborns, I’ve seen it all. Awake, asleep, fussy, calm—it’s all part of the newborn experience.
I Plan for Flexibility
A typical newborn session with me is designed with your baby in mind. That’s why I schedule 4-hour blocks—to allow time for anything your little one might need: feedings, diaper changes, snuggles, and those extra-long soothing moments. There’s never any pressure or rush. If your baby needs a break, we take one.
The studio is kept warm and cozy, white noise is playing in the background, and I have a collection of soft swaddles and props to help create a relaxing environment. All of this is intentionally set up to encourage sleep, but also to make awake moments comfortable and calm.
Awake Photos Are Beautiful Too
There’s a common assumption that newborns have to be asleep for great photos, but that’s not always the case. Some of the most heart-melting images are of wide-eyed babies staring right into the camera—or even better, locking eyes with Mom or Dad. These awake moments can be full of personality and are just as meaningful as those dreamy, sleepy poses.
What You Can Do to Help
Here are a few simple ways you can help prep your baby for a smooth session:
-
Try to keep baby awake for an hour or so before your appointment.
-
Feed baby right before the session or as soon as you arrive—full tummies promote sleep!
-
Dress baby in loose, easy-to-remove clothing to make transitions seamless.
But remember: even if none of this goes perfectly, you’re still going to get beautiful photos. I promise.
I Follow Baby’s Lead
Every baby is different, and that’s exactly why I work at your baby’s pace. If they’re awake and happy, we capture those moments. If they need time to fall asleep, we give them that time. The session is built around your baby’s needs, not the clock.
Final Thoughts
So, what if your newborn doesn’t sleep during their session? No stress—truly. Whether your baby snoozes peacefully or stays wide-eyed the whole time, I’ll capture beautiful, meaningful images that reflect this special moment in your family’s story. Just show up, relax, and let me do what I do best—taking care of the rest.
